The 2025 Yamaha BLU CRU Aussie Flat Track Nationals (AFTN) is set for a thrilling finale at Gunnedah’s Balcary Park this weekend (15–16 November), with 36-year-old Tom Armstrong poised to secure the Pro 450 championship title in his debut season.
Armstrong heads into the final rounds with a commanding 110-point lead over nearest rival Thomas Herrick, following a standout performance at his home round in Griffith, where he claimed two race wins. Local favourite Daniel Wicks remains in the title hunt and will look to capitalise on home track advantage, having taken a round win at Albury earlier in the season.
Also lining up at Gunnedah will be rising Griffith talent Billy Ryan, two-time national champion Michael Kirkness, and ASBK Superbike front-runner Cam Dunker.
The weekend will feature a packed schedule, with each class contesting eight races under AFTN’s signature double-header format: flat track racing on Saturday, followed by the TT layout on Sunday. The premier Pro 450 class is one of five categories in action, with key title battles across the board.
In Junior Lites, Jed Fyffe holds a narrow 17-point buffer over Neiko Donovan, with the pair locked in a season-long duel that now reaches its final chapter. Internationally-based Sam Drane will also make an appearance in the class, adding further intrigue to the mix.
Junior 85s has been dominated by Beau Baker, although the returning Hugo Holmes is expected to pose a challenge. Meanwhile, Sam Hollands is in the box seat to wrap up the Clubman Open title, and Ashley Wilesmith leads the Pro Twins standings aboard his Ducati Scrambler.
“This is a monster weekend for me. I’m pretty excited and nervous at the same time!” said Tom Armstrong, Pro 450 Points Leader.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good position coming into the last two rounds. I’ve been doing plenty of training and lots of riding since the Griffith round. I just want to have a clean weekend, play it smart and not do anything silly. I like the Gunnedah track, but the last time I rode there was nineteen years ago! It’ll be good to see it all done and hopefully I’m in a happy place on Sunday evening!”
Fans are also in for a treat with the appearance of the legendary Indian FTR750, set to be raced by Luke Gough. It’s believed to be the first time the American Flat Track-winning machine has competed on Australian soil.
“It’s great to be heading back to Gunnedah for the final round of the Yamaha Blu Cru Aussie Flat Track Nationals series, the club and local community are incredibly supportive and Balcary Park always provides edge-of-your-seat action,” said Series Organiser Dave Maddock.
“Tom Armstrong was predicted to be fast before the lights went out for this season, but I don’t think anybody could of expected him to be in prime position to take out the title, least of all himself! It’s been a pleasure having him on board this year, but the series isn’t over – it’s a long schedule of 28 races. Anything can happen.”
“The Pro Twin class will also be in action at Gunnedah on the flat track course, and I can’t wait to see the Indian FTR 750 in the flesh. That bike took 101 race wins from 135 starts in American Flat Track. Last year, the crowd was fantastic at Gunnedah. We’re crossing our fingers for some kind weather, and we can’t wait to see the outcome on Sunday afternoon.”
