Tamworth, get out and get dirty at the Mountain Bikers Triple-Event Weekend

Tamworth is about to become the heart of mountain biking in New South Wales as the Tamworth Mountain Bikers club prepares to host its action-packed Triple Event Weekend from Friday, August 8 to Sunday, August 10. Taking place at the Tamworth Mountain Bike Park on Forest Road, the weekend promises a vibrant mix of competitive racing, family fun, and community spirit.

The festivities kick off on Friday with Round 4 of the NSW School Mountain Bike Series, bringing together young riders from across the state. These school-based teams will take on the purpose-built off-road tracks in a showcase of emerging talent, enthusiasm, and team spirit. It’s a fitting way to launch the weekend, setting the tone for what promises to be three days of non-stop cycling action.

On Saturday, the focus shifts to accessibility and fun, with the “Bike Skills & Thrills” program welcoming riders of all ages and skill levels. Relay races, slow bike challenges, and balance contests are just the start, with workshops on basic maintenance and riding skills designed to give everyone a chance to get involved. From kids trying out mountain biking for the first time to seasoned riders looking for a light-hearted day on the trails, the event offers something for everyone.

Sunday will see the weekend culminate in Round 4 of the 2025 AusCycling NSW/ACT XCO State Series.

Committee member for Tamworth Mountain Bikers, Sharon Sipple said, “This is the 2nd time we’ve hosted the state series, last year was a really positive learning curve for us and we’re really happy to have the opportunity to host again.”

As the most competitive event of the weekend, this state-level race draws elite riders from across the region and beyond. The cross-country format will test racers’ endurance and technical ability over a range of terrains, with multiple age categories and adaptive divisions ensuring inclusive competition across the board.

Ms Sipple says that participating doesn’t have to be scary though.

“The weekend is really about inclusivity and welcoming everyone of all ages and abilities.”

“We really want to emphasise that you don’t actually have to be competitive – people get freaked out by the idea that this is a race but if you’ve got the skill to ride a bike, you’re welcome to register and attend, we only use the green and blue tracks for this event.”

“My favourite event from last year was the adaptive riders, it’s an incredibly inspiring race to watch.”

Throughout the weekend, Tamworth Mountain Bike Park will serve as both race hub and community campground. Free on-site camping is available, with access to drop toilets, town water, and a nearby playground, making it an ideal base for families or groups looking to make a weekend of it. Parking will be available for the general public, with dedicated access for campers, event staff, and adaptive riders.

Off the track, there’ll be no shortage of local flavour. The Tamworth Mountain Bikers clubhouse will be serving BBQ sausages and burgers, as well as sweet treats like brownies and cupcakes. Freshly brewed coffee will be on hand thanks to a mobile van from All Streets Coffee, helping spectators and riders alike fuel up between events.

Organisers are encouraging both competitors and spectators to take part, with the goal of making mountain biking more visible, accessible, and inclusive across the Tamworth region. The combination

of state-level competition, family-friendly activities, and grassroots community support is what makes this event so unique and enduring.

“Registrations are still very much open, we’d love to hit a target of 60-70 riders this year,” said Ms Sipple.

“We’re also still on the hunt for volunteers to help out on the day and also spectators – we’d love to see as many people come down and enjoy the weekend!”

With a reputation for running fun, well-supported events and the backing of AusCycling NSW/ACT, the Tamworth Mountain Bikers club is set to deliver another unforgettable weekend. Whether you’re riding, cheering, camping, or just dropping in for a coffee and a look around, the Triple Event Weekend is not to be missed. Registration is via the Tamworth Mountain Bikers website.
